What sartorial flair. What wonderful checks. Perhaps most powerfully of all - what shoulders!
This is a modern recreation of the suit made by Tommy Nutter for Beatle Ringo Starr, as featured on the new set of Royal Mail stamps that celebrate Britain's most inspiring fashion designers.
Unfortunately there are only two suits in the set, this one and a rather less dramatic blue two-piece by Paul Smith. But both are worthy of a second look. Notice the variation between checks in Tommy's suit, with the trousers picked up on the patch pocket and binding. Notice the wide, sweeping shawl lapel. Ah hell, look at those shoulders again. They are magnificent.
Fashion photographer Solve Sundsbo shot the suits, deliberately posing them to highlight the structure and detailing, as well as blanking out the faces to concentrate on the clothes. As designers Johnson Banks, who put the set together, pointed out, when you see a suit like that on Ringo Starr, most people only notice Ringo Starr. It's high time the general public was forced to look at Tommy's tailoring too.
